Geography

Geography is about places, people and the environment. A good geographer likes to ask lots of questions about the world around them and appreciates that things are not always as they seem. We want to stimulate students’ interest in their surroundings.

Years 7 and 8

Pupils complete a series of topics during the year covering the main areas of focus: Human, Physical and Environmental Geography. We also undertake local fieldwork opportunities where possible as it is important to gain a wider sense of the world around us through outdoor learning.

As well as improving students’ knowledge and understanding, geography lessons focus on improving skills such as report writing, reading graphs, carrying out experiments and map skills. A key focus is about how things may change in the future and making informed decisions about a range of important topical issues and debates. To help students make the best possible progress we encourage both group and independent learning.

Homework is set that encourages students to find out things for themselves and work takes place often in the form of a project completed over a half term. An assembly of celebration is then conducted to display the winners from Geography homework projects. Prizes are given to the winners for their fantastic work.

Years 9, 10 and 11

At GCSE there is an equal split of physical to human geography so pupils explore geographical concepts at different points of scale and impact globally.  In every geography lesson students are given the opportunity to explore a sense of wonder about the Earth and how both wildlife and humans interact together.
