Physical Education

Physical education develops pupils’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives both in and out of school. They develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they think about what they are doing, analyse the situation and make decisions. They also reflect on their own and others’ performances and find ways to improve them.

Years 7 and 8

Pupils complete a minimum of six activities each year. They have two 60 minute lessons per week and will usually do an activity for a half term. The activities covered can be seen in the tables below.

Years 9, 10 and 11

All students study a qualification in Years 9,10 and 11 and this will be in the form of GCSE PE or BTEC Sport Level 2 and has an allocation of five hours per fortnight.

School Games

We are proud to offer every pupil in school the opportunity to be involved in competitive sport through our Level 1 School Games programme. Pupils compete in intra-house competitions half termly, which culminates in a huge celebratory finals day during the summer term which complements our traditional sports day.

Salford City Academy is the host site for the Borough’s School Games Organiser Lyndsey Nolan, whose remit is orientated around five core tasks supporting Salford’s secondary schools, offering support and advice for Level 1 and coordinating Levels 2 and 3.

These core tasks are:

Participation: Drive participation in School Games competition and increase the number of young people taking part in competition.
Competition for All: Develop competitive opportunities for all, including the least active.
Clubs: Increase regular participation in club sport, involve the least active through Change4Life Sports Clubs and increase links to local clubs.
Workforce: Broaden participation opportunities through volunteering and workforce roles.
Performance: Establish key performance indicators, target delivery and review progress on a termly basis.

The Games are made up of three levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools and at county/area level. There is also a national event for the most talented young people in the UK.

• Intra-school (Level 1) - sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition
• Inter-school (Level 2) - individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools in local inter-school competitions
• Sainsbury's School Games Festivals (Level 3) – the county/area will stage multi-sport Sainsbury's School Games Festivals as a culmination of year-round school sport competition.

Active Extra

Salford City Academy offers an extensive extra-curricular breakfast, lunch and after school sports programme, which we call Active Extra. This gives students the opportunity to hone their skills and represent the school in a range of sports and we regularly achieve success at local, regional and sometimes national level. We pride ourselves on providing equal opportunities for those who want to have a bit of fun through to the competitive natured individuals.
