Dorothy Byrne Visit

Channel 4's Head of News & Current Affairs

We were delighted to welcome Dorothy Byrne from Channel 4 to Salford City Academy on 11th November.

Year 10 and 11 students listened to Dorothy talk about her career in the media and the pathway she has followed.

Students received advice about career goals and ambitions.  Dorothy reflected on her own experiences, and in particular, about the importance of persistence which helped her achieve in a largely male dominated workplace.

A group of students were invited to have lunch with Dorothy before her talk began.  Year 11 student Precious Oladele enjoyed the opportunity to quiz Dorothy about her career as she is interested in studying media at college.

Precious said:

“Dorothy was very friendly and approachable and she asked each of us about our plans for the future.   When I said I wanted to study a BTEC in journalism, Dorothy told me about how she trained and gave me some interesting areas to investigate.  She offered some great interview tips, such as how to do research beforehand and how to drop facts into conversation! It was all really useful.”

Dorothy was appointed Channel 4’s Head of News & Current Affairs in September 2003, having previous edited award-winning Channel 4 programme Dispatches.  She was made a Fellow of The Royal Television Society for her “outstanding contribution to television”. She has also won the Factual Award (given by Women in Film and Television). She is chair of the Ethical Journalism Network which supports the development of ethical codes in journalistic organisations across the globe. She is also a visiting professor of Journalism at Lincoln University.
