Year 8 Choices Day at Manchester Universities

On Thursday 21st November, a group of fifteen Year 8 students enjoyed a trip to the University of Manchester to learn more about further education and their options once they finish school.

The “Choices Day” is run by Manchester Higher to inform Year 8 and 9 students about the options available to them, and encourage individuals to make informed and beneficial decisions.

Both the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University have involvement in the day, with students receiving a guided tour of both campuses, and having sessions in buildings of both universities. The campus tours, led by student ambassadors from the University of Manchester and MMU, also took in sights of cultural interest such as the Aquatics Centre and the old university libraries.

After lunch, the students watched a performance by theatre group 2Engage. The performance depicted a group of Year 8 students deciding about their options and debating whether to simply choose what their friends were doing. The play was designed to make the students think, and the overall message of the performance was to choose what you want to do and what interests you, not what others might tell you to do.

Jack Staveley, a Year 8 student commented:

“The campus tour was great as we saw all the old buildings and the library that has been there for years. The 2Engage performance was really funny, and I made friends with students from other schools.”

Mrs Burgess, Head of Careers, who organised the trip, said:

“I was very proud of all of our students. They asked the student ambassadors some excellent questions during our tours, and represented Salford City Academy brilliantly.”
