Aspiring Scientists Regenerate Academy Environment

Aspire is a well-established extra-curricular programme at the heart of the curriculum at Salford City Academy; striving to consistently promote the extensive personal development of all students through providing extensive opportunities in order to develop their talents and interests.

Over the last few weeks, come rain or shine, students across the academy have continued to collaborate after school; with the aim of regenerating a large disused nature garden located at the rear of the academy.

From clearing and pruning bushes, trees and large wasteland, to removing an old pond liner from within a large waterlogged pond; students have come together to improve their learning and community environment.

Multiple animals have been discovered and even re-homed in nicer habitats as part of the project; including frogs, mice and differing insects. Our students are very proud of their sampling techniques developed in their science lessons, that has enabled them to learn more about their school environment in a more practical way during this project. From discovering pitfall traps and pooters to even creating their very own bug hotels.

Numerous apple trees laden with fruit have also been hand-picked, whilst students have learned more about the importance of food development and sustainability. Hundreds of tasty apples have even been passed onto the academy's food technology department to be used as ingredients in future lessons.

This ongoing project continues to demonstrate the hard work of students and has re-ignited just how lucky we are at Salford City Academy to have such beautiful grounds.
