Salford City Academy’s former student returns for teacher training
Former Salford City Academy student Nathan Dickson is back at his old school, only this time around as a teacher!
Nathan originally attended the Peel Green based academy from 2005 to 2012, gaining a triple distinction* in his BTEC Extended Sports Diploma after staying on in the Sixth Form.
Now in his third year of studying Sport Science at the University of Salford, the 21 year-old from Eccles turned to the Academy to help him with a placement as he pursues a place on a PGCE course, with a view to eventually becoming a teacher.
As part of the placement, which started in September, Nathan must complete 140 hours and visits the Academy each week, working alongside Head of Sports and Creative Arts Mr Morrison to provide support in PE and other subject lessons, giving him a real flavour of life as a teacher.
The placement is also the ideal opportunity for Nathan to put to good use the coaching skills he learnt after successfully completing a Sports Leadership Programme whilst at the academy.
Commented Nathan:
“I chose to do my placement at Salford City Academy because I knew how good staff support would be, both in PE, as well as the school on a whole. I thought this would drive my development as a teacher. It’s been really interesting to be on this side of things and find out how the school runs daily!”
Added Salford City Academy Principal Helen Mackenzie OBE:
“It’s always rewarding to see how our former students progress, particularly in this case when we are able to help support Nathan in his ambition to become a teacher.”
