We were pleased to welcome pupils from Westwood Park primary school for a World of Work visit to the Academy’s Sixth Form salon.
Fourteen Year 5 and 6 pupils had expressed an interest in the hair and beauty industry when quizzed in school about their career ambitions.
Salford City Academy were happy to invite the pupils to visit the Sixth Form’s in-house salon to meet Beauty teacher Rachel Swaby and her students.
Rachel Swaby said:
“We were happy to show Westwood Park pupils our salon and students, and show them the opportunities available for training and working as a hairdresser, nail technician or beauty therapist.”
BTEC Hair students showcased the hairdressing facilities and put on a blow-dry demonstration whilst BTEC Beauty Therapy students performed a manicure and applied acrylic nails in front of pupils.
Eloise, Year 6 said:
“I really want to be a nail artist; I like doing my nails as well as other people’s.”
As well as watching the treatments and looking at all the specialist equipment, pupils collected information about the training required for working in the hair and beauty industry and also the skills needed for jobs in that sector.
Chloe, Year 5 said:
“I wanted to see what it’s like to work in a salon or hairdressers because I’d like to work in one when I’m older.”
Kenisha, Year 6 said:
“I really enjoy doing hair and nails and I like finding out about new things, so I was excited to come and see the salon.”
