Salford City Academy is to launch a new award scheme in Science.
CREST is a UK award scheme, accredited by the British Science Association and students will be invited to participate in the summer term.
The scheme is open to 11-19 years and gives them an opportunity to explore real-world science, technology, engineering and maths projects in an exciting way. There are different levels of CREST Award:
-
Bronze (around 10 hours project work; typically for 11-to-14-year-olds)
-
Silver (around 30 hours project work; typically for 14-to-16-year-olds)
-
Gold (around 70 hours project work; typically for 16-to-19-year olds)
Salford City Academy will begin by inviting Years 7, 8 and 9 to join an after school club to take part in the Bronze CREST Award.
Mr Jones, Science Technician, will lead the students in a project, such as manufacturing toothpaste, and will ask them to research, undertake practicals and present their work to their peers.
Students will be individually assessed and successful students will receive a personalised certificate.
Mr Rogers, Head of Science, said:
“This upcoming award scheme is an exciting opportunity in science for our students. The scheme will reward hands-on science and will develop our students’ skill-sets further. It’s a well-regarded scheme and UCAS endorses CREST Awards for inclusion in students’ personal statements.”
