Salford City Academy welcomed world famous drummer and ex-band member of Status Quo, Jeff Rich, on 12th September 2012. The musician visited the academy to deliver a masterclass to drum up enthusiasm for percussion instruments amongst the Year 7 and 8 students.
As well as giving the students a taste of his international music career touring with Status Quo, Jeff also gave them an insight into the exciting music industry. He told students how it all began with a biscuit tin and a pair of knitting needles when he was 9!
Jeff Rich said:
"Music has to be fun and that's what a hobby or training professionally is all about; that's why I would practise every day for 2 hours, I wasn't popular with the neighbours, but there was no easy route if I wanted the rewards!"
The masterclass included demonstrations of a variety of drums with students invited up to the front to have a go. After a rousing performance on his drum kit, Jeff then organised a jamming session for the whole group with over 200 percussion instruments for everyone to join in.
Jo Landon, Subject Leader for Music, said:
"It was a fantastic opportunity to have Jeff into the academy today to demonstrate percussion instruments in this way and to inspire our keen drummers; the plan is to start a rock band after this!"
Finally, Jeff invited students who are currently taking drum lessons to perform on his drum kit. Both Peter Oladipio, aged 13, and Yvan Gisingizo, aged 12, leapt at the chance.
Peter Oladipo, Year 9, said:
"The whole morning's been amazing; I've really enjoyed it. I love playing the drums and the way you feel the music through your body."
Igor Kolinski, Year 7, enjoyed demonstrating the talking African drum and said after the masterclass:
"I was really inspired by the kids playing the drums; I really want to do drum lessons now!"
