Salford City Academy student Keira Timmis has won a gold medal in the martial art of Kata, just 18 months after being introduced to the sport
Year 8 student Keira,12, took top spot at the SKU British Open Championships in Sheffield, competing against young people up to two years older than herself on her way to the title.
Now Keira, who took up the sport after being bullied, has her sights set on representing Team GB at the Olympics, having already won 4 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze medals during her short time in the sport.
She will now defend her title in November when she takes part in another national tournament in Manchester.
Commenting on her achievement, Keira said: “I feel so proud of myself, because Kata has given me so much confidence and it’s something I know that I’m really good at. My Mum and Dad say I have the ‘Team Timmis Temper’ when I compete and it’s a sport I really, really enjoy.”
Salford City Academy Principal Mrs Haselden said: “Keira has done an amazing thing by taking a negative situation and turning it into a real positive. We’re all incredibly proud of her here at Salford City Academy and look forward to cheering her on to even greater success in the future.”
