Salford City Academy students were given an insight into what it takes to become a published writer after meeting a real-life author.
Becky Fleetwood (who is in fact English Teacher Mrs Hawley’s Mum!) spent lunchtime with a group of students across all year groups talking about her new book and fielding questions from an enthusiastic audience.
‘Chroma – Imogen’s Secret’ is a Science Fantasy novel about a young girl who can see the emotional and mental state of everyone she meets. It is the first in a series of three stories she plans to write.
Over a buffet lunch our students bombarded her with questions, asking about everything from how to publish a story and what it takes to become an author to her inspirations and processes of working.
Salford City Academy Librarian Mrs Wilkinson said: “We are so thankful to Becky for coming in to visit and we had a great turnout of students who were over the moon to meet her! Everyone was really enthused with meeting a professional writer and one student was so excited she took the book home and read it in one night!”
Year 8 Student Chris Eaves said: “It was a great experience because when you’re in English you are writing stories all the time and we picked up some really good tips on how to improve our work.”
At the end of the session, Becky signed some copies of the book for her new fans. In March, we will be welcoming another author to our library, with Blue Peter Book Award-winner Alan Gibbons paying us a visit.
