Nice to be Nice!

Students take part in ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’

It’s nice to be nice! That was the message at Salford City Academy, whose students took part in national ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ on Friday (17th February).

From making a donation and giving someone a hug to volunteering for a good cause or just smiling, students at the Peel Green school helped make themselves and others feel better by taking part in the event.

First launched in Denver, Colorado in 1995, ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ is now celebrated in the UK in February, with research showing that performing acts of kindness is actually good for body as well as spirit.

As well as releasing chemicals which help lower blood pressure and improve heart health, people making acts of kindness also feel stronger and more energetic after helping others.

At Salford City Academy, students from all year groups were encouraged to take part, with special mentor sessions and a commitment to write down and then carry out three random acts of kindness each.

Commented the academy’s Head of School, Victoria Birchwood:

“Part of our ethos is respect, of ourselves and others, and we always actively encourage our students to look at ways they can contribute to not just the school environment, but also the wider community. ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ is a great way of encouraging and supporting this.”
