Opportunity Knocks For SCA Aspire Day

SCA was a hub of activity for the school’s first ever Aspire Day.

Students spent the day off their usual timetables to try their hand at a number of exciting workshops, with many having a go at activities they’ve never tried before.

In Year 11, several local organisations visited to carry out mock job interviews in order to help get our oldest cohort prepared for life after secondary school. Employers such as Whitfield Brown and Nimans - as well as Pendleton Sixth Form College -  spent the morning 'interviewing' students, before giving them feedback on how they performed.

Meanwhile, in Year 10, students had a go at a wide range of subjects including Art and Orienteering. In Art, they looked at the work of Georgia O’Keefe before having a go at creating their own masterpieces in her style.

Year 7 students enjoyed a morning of STEM activities after being set the challenge of creating their own marble rollercoaster out of paper and card. Working in small groups, they came up with ideas for the design and built them – testing how well they worked later in the afternoon.

Teamwork and communication was also the name of the game with a group of students who spent the day visiting Challenge4Change at Trafford Park. Students had to work together to get around a difficult assault course that involved ropes, swings and plenty of time in the air!

Other highlights of Aspire Day included group work with Business Studies and MFL, with students creating their own tribal community – coming up with their own ideas for maps, models and marketing for an island settlement.

The day ended with a Students vs Staff netball match, with a fantastic atmosphere and excellent sportsmanship on both sides!

Principal Ms Haselden said: “At SCA we strive to provide an education with character, and our Aspire Day certainly contributes towards this aim.

“Students had the opportunity to have a go at a wide range of new activities and also gain valuable experience to prepare them for the world of work. We would like to thank the agencies and organisations who supported us throughout the day, and we are very much looking forward to the next one!”

At the start of term, SCA launched its brand new Aspire Programme, with students getting the chance to get involved in a variety of after-school clubs including Lego Enterprise, Debate Master and Student Newsletter. For more information, you can visit the Aspire section of our website here.
