Salford City Academy Students Celebrate We Day In London

Students visit the capital for the international charity’s annual celebration at Wembley Arena. WE Day is about empowering young people to create positive social change. Visit forms part of the academy’s commitment to providing an ‘Education with Character’.

Students from Salford City Academy took a trip to London’s Wembley Arena this week to celebrate WE Day alongside thousands of young people.

The annual WE Charity UK event is about young people becoming empowered to create social change and celebrating the impact that they can have in their local and global communities.

Held in over 15 cities across the world, WE Day is the manifestation of the WE movement and highlighting young people and teachers who have made a difference. Featuring an inspiring line-up of world-renowned speakers, award-winning performers and real-world stories of change, schools have to earn their tickets through undertaking social action projects over the course of the year.

At Salford City Academy, students have been actively involved in projects that support their local community and those around the world. This includes supporting projects covering around mental health and aspiration. Students were also very lucky to attend the Dove Self Esteem Project, also organised by WE, in November 2019.

The WE Day event provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate what students have achieved as part of this project and the skills they have gained. Experiences of this kind are an excellent example of what Salford City Academy calls an ‘Education with Character’ – one that inspires, excites and challenges students so that they leave school as confident, socially-minded young adults.

Calia, a Salford City Academy student in Year 10, spoke of her WE Day experience:

“It was quite an inspirational day and helpful for a lot of people. It was enjoyable as well!”

Year 8 Mille agreed saying:

“They taught us a lesson through fun!”

Alex-Joseph, Year 10 student, added:

“After this event I now feel motivated to change the world positively!”

Daisy Brindley, Inclusion Manager at Salford City Academy, said:

“Today gave our students the opportunity to hear from celebrities such as Lewis Hamilton and Idris Elba, alongside a range of motivational and inspiring tales from refugees, disabled young people and climate activists. This event was an amazing experience that will hugely benefit our students in their future and recognises the work that they do as part of our school community. I hope that they have all left feeling a little more like they can change their world.”
