On Friday 8th November 2013, Salford City Academy held a careers event for the Sixth Form students. Stands were set up in the Sixth Form Library, with a huge variety of companies and organisations in attendance. These included CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), Salford Royal Hospital, the Army, Royal Navy, STEGTA (Salford & Trafford Engineering Group Training Association), The University of Manchester, Connexions and Dock 10 from MediaCityUK.
All students spoke to at least one of the attendees and gained valuable information and advice about their future careers or higher education. Many students spoke to people representing areas of work that they had not previously considered, and found that it could be something to think about for the future.
Dock 10 are a media company at MediaCityUK, who are keen to work with us at SCA. The company representatives spoke to many of our students, discussing the variety of careers in the media industry and how well their business has taken off since they set up at Salford Quays. Year 12 student, Tom Williams has secured himself a work placement for next year with Dock 10 and they are looking forward to working with him.
Debbie Brown, Applied Learning Administrator said:
“The event was a great success with lots of positive comments from the students about information and advice for their future. The attendees commented how pleasant our students were and said that they asked some good questions about career pathways.”
Results from a survey filled in by the Sixth Form students who attended the event show that 80% of the students considered the event to be ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’.
