Spanish Dream Towns

On 13th December 2013, the Salford Business Enterprise Partnership (BEP) came into school with 3 Spanish speaking volunteers from local businesses to work with Year 8 students on a project entitled ‘Spanish Dream Town’.
The students were split into groups of 5 and Rachel Hindley went through an information booklet that each student was provided with. This activity intended to give the students the opportunity to recognise, develop and apply their knowledge and understanding of Spanish whilst gaining skills to improve their future employability. They were to achieve this by designing, budgeting and building a small town, with specific requirements including a post office, church, hospital and shopping centre. They then had to draw their town with all the relevant buildings and parks. Each student in the group had a specific job role of Managing Director, Finance Manager, Architect, Marketing Manager or Researcher, allowing all students to have their own jobs to do in the process of creating the town.
Once all the plans were complete, the groups could start ‘building’ their town, using lots of materials that the BEP had provided. All the buildings had to be labelled in Spanish and they had to think of a Spanish name for their town.
The students created some excellent models of towns, with some good names and not so good names! The groups then had to stand up and conduct a presentation in Spanish about their town, the name of it and what buildings they had in the town. Each member of the team had to explain what their job role was, again in Spanish.
Overall, all the students did really well, working together in teams with students they wouldn’t normally choose to work with, and calculating, designing and discussing the important things needed for a small town.

“This was an excellent way for pupils to put into practice what they have been covering during lessons. It gave them confidence in their oral ability of the Spanish language, team working experience and budgeting practice. A really worthwhile activity.”
