Staff Link Up for National CPD Day

United Learning staff join together for training and professional development
On Friday 1st July, over 3,000 teaching and non-teaching staff took part, joining colleagues from United Learning schools to share best practice, engage in subject specialism development and learn more about the Framework for Excellence. The day follows United Learning’s success at the HR Excellence Awards 2016, where the Group won the award for ‘Outstanding Employee Engagement Strategy.’
The national CPD Day saw academies across the country host events.
In the North West, 155 teachers gathered at Salford City Academy, which hosted workshops in English, Maths and science.
We welcomed keynote speaker, Lisa Jane Ashes (aka The Learning Geek) who talked about ‘Manglish’ - combining Maths and English, amongst other teaching and learning strategies.
The academy’s Head of English, Jamie Barker, and Head of Maths, Andy Wexler, led collaborative working and planning sessions, exploring the new mastery curriculum and exploring the new specifications for Key Stage 4.
Commenting on the success of the day, Mandy Coalter, United Learning’s Director of People, said:
“One of the benefits of being a national group of academies and independent schools is that we are able to place a significant emphasis on CPD. With clusters of schools across the country, colleagues are able to meet up on days like this so that the discussion and learning can comprise far wider perspectives than is possible within a single school.
“We know from our employee survey that staff are eager to participate in group-wide thinking and learning and value having opportunities to share their experience with colleagues from our other schools.
“A great deal can be achieved in a single day and, in our experience, the ideas and inspiration that come from colleagues can provide the impetus or plant the seeds of an idea that can be translated or replicated in classrooms and staffrooms across a cluster of schools.
“As a group, it is great to see pupils and staff collaborating across the country for a wider range of projects, from today’s CPD sessions to the Spirit of Rio cultural festival which our schools are currently celebrating."
