The SCA Student Librarians spent the day celebrating all things literary with a visit to the annual Salford Children’s Book Awards.
After arriving at Salford University, which was hosting the event this year, the group had the chance to browse through the books of nominated authors. They then made their way into the theatre for the start of the ceremony itself.
In the build up to the big day, young people across the city had the opportunity to vote for their favourite title, with hundreds of entries shortlisted to just six – all of who were attending on the day for the announcement of the overall winner.
Each finalist had their book presented on stage, and two of our students – Harrison and Ismael – were picked to talk about “Kick”, by Mitch Johnson. They read a brilliant speech they’d prepared beforehand and received a book voucher for their efforts.
Ismael was then selected from all of the student guests to reveal the winner of the competition and, after a nerve-jangling countdown, announced the 2019 champion as Ross Welford’s “The 1,000 Year Old Boy”.
After the event, students met all the authors and asked them to sign the certificates they had received for being part of the ceremony. They also met the Mayor and Mayoress of Salford.
Literacy Co-ordinator Mrs Hawley said: “We had a great day at the Salford Children’s Book Awards and I was so proud of all of our students for their impeccable behaviour and outstanding attitude throughout.
“They were so excited to meet the authors of some of their favourite books and to be able to present the award itself was a once in a lifetime experience – well done to everyone involved.”
