Salford City Academy students celebrated the 50th anniversary of the galaxy’s greatest timelord when Doctor Who authors Tommy Donbavand and Mark Wright dropped into school.
Tommy is the author of a number of Doctor Who books, while Mark also writes Doctor Who audio books and magazines.
The authors discussed the mysteries of time and space on Thursday 21st November when they visited the academy, taking part in a number of interactive workshops with Year 7 and 8 students.
Students had the chance to create their own Doctor Who characters, settings and stories as part of the authors’ visit, which aimed to engage young people in literature through the appeal of this popular fictional figure – star of the world’s longest running science fiction television programme.
Students were also set the task to watch a short clip from the programme before creating a story in their own words about what happened next.
Kia Preston-Warke, a Year 7 student, commented:
“It was a really exciting day. I was very curious about what we were going to do with the authors and I really enjoyed writing my own Doctor Who story.”
Michael McCabrey, a Year 8 student, said of the day:
"It was awesome. I loved being imaginative and making our own characters and stories."
For the final part of the day, all of Year 7 and 8 watched part of a Doctor Who episode, before taking part in a quiz about the clip. Pupils who answered questions correctly were thrilled to receive a Doctor Who book as a prize.
Miss Wilkinson, Manager of the Academy’s Learning Resource Centre commented:
“It was fantastic to welcome Tommy and Mark to the academy and particularly fitting as Doctor Who celebrates its half century. The visit was a fantastic opportunity for our students, who will be able to learn from the knowledge and advice both Tommy and Mark have provided. Author visits are a wonderful way of enthusing students about literature, with many of those who took part going on to write about the characters they created during their sessions with Tommy and Mark.”
