Year 7 students visit Manchester University
On 25th May, a group of Year 7 students participated in the University Uncovered event, part of a larger series of activities called The University of Manchester Gateways Programme.
The Gateways Programme provides academy students with the opportunity to find out more about Higher Education (HE), including the range of courses available, and to develop their key skills in areas that will help to raise their confidence and achievement.
The students had the opportunity to:
- Explore the University campus on a tour and visit the John Ryland’s University Library, Whitworth Hall where their students graduate and the Students’ Union
- Learn about different subjects that can be studied at university in a competitive and fun “University Challenge” activity
- Develop key transferrable skills such as team work, problem solving and communication
Year 7 student Ami said:
“I’d been to a university before to drop off my sister, but I’d not had the chance to tour one and meet students. We also learnt about lots of different subject areas we could study.”
Fellow student Alicia added:
“It was great to play all the games at the different subject workstations – we did chocolate tasting in Media and looked at MRI scans in Science. I’m looking forward to going back every year and we’ve been given workbooks to fill in each time.”
