On Wednesday 2nd October, students in Year 10 took part in Work Experience Preparation Day, a chance to hone important skills such as CV writing and find out about what to expect from Work Experience Week next March. The students each took part in five different workshops to learn and practice a range of skills required in the workplace.
One session was devoted to CV writing, where students had the chance to put together their own CV after seeing examples of the "dos and don'ts" of this important document. Another session, led by Head of Careers Mrs Burgess, focused on the importance of Work Experience. This session gave Year 10 the opportunity to ask questions about the week, where they could work and start thinking about applications.
The "World of Work" workshop saw visitors from a variety of different careers speak to small groups of students about their jobs. This session gave students the unique chance to ask questions and find out about a range of interesting career pathways, including Youth Working, the Army and jobs within the NHS.
In the "Team Building" workshop, students learned about the importance of teamwork through a hands-on activity. Small groups were challenged to build a bridge strong enough to hold a toy train out of only paper, sticky tape and paper clips! However, there was not an unlimited supply - Year 10 were provided with a budget and had to purchase only the materials they needed, testing their problem solving skills. The bridges were judged on style, engineering, and most importantly whether they could withstand the weight of the train.
Perhaps the most nerve wracking session was the Mock Interviews, where students had the opportunity to practice their interview skills in a formal environment. Students first prepared for the interviews, by going through practice questions and learning about what to expect. They were then called one-by-one to the Main Hall, where they were questioned by one of our visitors in the same way that they might be during a real job or apprenticeship interview. This was a fantastic and useful experience for our students, who relished the opportunity and performed brilliantly.
Tia Dean said of the day, "it was amazing, I got to meet new people and experience something new" while Jessica Royle commented, "I learnt a lot of helpful information for the future."
The day was a great success and Year 10 are now prepared for the application process for Work Experience placements, and looking forward to putting their skills in to practice in March.
