Students Begin Preparations for the Working World
Barclays visited the academy on Tuesday 10th January for a session all about teaching employability and helping prepare students for the 21st century workplace. All the skills developed through the session are essential for school and beyond:
Creativity, Problem solving, Resilience, Communications, Interpersonal skills, Leadership and Proactivity
The workshop began with a ‘People Skills’ session about building self-confidence and personal growth by overcoming challenges. The students themselves were asked to share their own fantastic advice to overcome challenges, including:
“Just go for it!”
“Make your dreams come true.”
“Don’t be embarrassed.”
Next was a session on thinking confidently by reflecting on both the positives and negatives of past events. By looking at events in this ways, students learnt about optimism and building self-belief.
Workplace behaviour scenarios asked our students how they would react in a variety of situations. By looking at workplace culture, our Year 7s learnt about expectations standards for both work experience or in a new job.
Finally, communication and body language was tackled and students thought about how they can make a good first impression.
Year 7 students found the session engaging and following the event said:
Olivia – “We were taught about trying to conquering our fears – to try not to be afraid and to keep going.”
Alicia – “I learnt about body language and to change the way I sit in lesson as you need to be careful not to look disinterested in the way you’re sat even if you are interested!”
Ami – “Looking confident is important in presentations and job interviews, even if you are nervous inside! It shows you can handle pressure.”
