Introducing our new team of transition mentors
We have elected our second cohort of Year 7 peers mentors following the success of the scheme last year.
The peer mentors’ role is to assist Year 6 students as they make the move from primary to secondary and then be available to help as they settle into academy life in September.
For each of our feeder secondary schools, there are two former pupils acting as their peer mentors. They will visit old friends at their primary schools to answer all their questions about the academy, joining secondary school and finding their way around.
Our peer mentors will also join in the academy’s Summer School in July and other transition days so that there are some familiar faces for the Year 6s.
The group has undertaken training to develop their listening and mediation skills, how to recognise feelings such as sadness, learning about confidentiality and knowing which members of staff to direct students for help.
Rose Daniels, KS3 Inclusion Manager, said:
“Our Year 8 peer mentors have done a fantastic job in the last year or so and Year 7 pupils continue to approach them for help. The new Year 7 peer mentors, selected for demonstrating qualities such as kindness, responsibility and trustworthiness, will be a fantastic addition to the transition team and are looking forward to being there for any students with worries about high school.”
